About

A roof looks simple from the street, but a lot is going on above your head: shingles, underlayment, flashing, gutters, ventilation and insulation all have to work together. Most of the time you only notice when a stain appears on the ceiling, a gutter overflows, a storm lifts a few shingles or an estimate arrives that you cannot judge.

Roof Systems Explained answers two questions about every part of a home roof: how does it work, and why is it built that way. We explain roofing materials, flashing, gutters, ventilation and insulation, what usually goes wrong, and when the right move is to call a licensed roofer, an electrician or your local building department.

What we cover

  • Roof types, shingles, metal, tile and flat roofing materials.
  • Flashing, valleys, skylights and chimneys.
  • Gutters, downspouts and drainage.
  • Attic ventilation, insulation and ice dams.
  • Inspection, leaks, repairs and storm damage.

How we make our guides

  • Diagrams, not stock photos. Our guides are built around simplified illustrations that show how a roof layer, flashing detail or drainage path works. Treat them as explanatory drawings rather than exact replicas of any specific brand, model or local design.
  • Safety first. Working on a roof means working at height, with slippery surfaces and, sometimes, electrical hazards. When a job is not safe to do alone, we say so plainly and point you to a licensed professional.
  • Plain language. We explain the technical terms the first time we use them.
